What is Relay for Life?
Relay for Life brings together the people of Derry/Londonderry to help beat cancer sooner.
It is an overnight event where we Celebrate Life, Remember and Fight Back against that awful disease which touches everyone.
Teams
Absolutely anyone can be in a team, consisting of usually between 8-15 members made up of families, friends and colleagues - max 24 per team. Team members take it in turn to walk the track during the 24 Relay.
Survivors
One of our main aims is to celebrate hope, celebrate life, and the extra birthdays which our survivors have enjoyed since their diagnosis. So if you have ever heard those dreaded words “you have cancer” then you are invited to be one of our special guests at Relay.
The Build Up
Once you have a team, then the FUNdraising starts, throughout the year, leading up to Relay, teams are busy putting on quizzes/race nights/coffee mornings/fashion shows and more to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. We have lots of team meetings, where you’ll be inspired and helped to make Relay for Life a success.
On The Day
Opening Ceremony
Relay for Life Legenderry will start at 1.00pm with our Opening Ceremony. We will have a few words from guest speakers, and then our VIPs, the Survivors will walk the first lap, cheered on and supported by the community and fellow Relayers. Following behind the survivors we will then have a procession of all our teams.
Entertainment
Throughout the 24 hours there’s plenty to keep the community and Relayers entertained, from Live music to Bingo to Themes laps and the Silent Disco during the night for registered Relayers! There will also plenty to keep the young relayers entertained.
Cancer Awareness Themed Laps
Each hour, there’s a new theme for those walking the track, more details about this will be available nearer the time.
Candle of Hope
Leading up to this ceremony, candle bags are dedicated to those people affected by cancer. As dusk falls, we gather to remember our loved ones, lighting the candles in the Candle Bags that are placed all around the track. The candles stay lit as we walk throughout the night. We have our Candle of Hope Ceremony which is a very moving period of reflection and remembrance.
Closing Ceremony
Everyone joins together for the final lap, and we take a look back at how we got there. It’s a lap of celebration, of everyone’s achievements, on completing what will be a fantastic Relay.
After Party
We gather again a few weeks after the event to celebrate Relay and to hear the final total raised. We might even hand out an award or two!
